The horse has been an ancient wisdom-companion for the Traditional Peoples of North America for thousands of years. Meet Thunder Bear Yates, a member of the Tesuque and Nambé Pueblos, and the Cultural Educator for EQUUS for a one-hour encounter with the remarkable EQUUS horse herd. Thunder Bear will share information about his tradition and his people's unique relationship to nature through the lens of our collective relationship to the horse. Insightful, impactful and inspiring, this is a rare and one-of-a-kind authentic cultural experience.

Yes, but with some conditions. Because you will be immersed in a herd of seven equines, we request that children under 10 are closely monitored and supervised by parents at all times. More than two children under 10 will require an additional support person alongside Thunder Bear and will need to be arranged separately.

Not at all! Our horses and donkeys are safe and respectful. You will experience an uncommon connection with the herd that has nothing to do with riding or horsemanship.

No. The experience is ‘on the ground’ with the horses, immersed in the herd.

We require that you wear closed toe shoes and long pants. You will also want to wear weather appropriate- clothing that you do not mind getting dusty, and that will keep you comfortable in the outdoor weather conditions.

The Native American Horse Herd Encounter is held in the arena at our discovery and learning campus - Buffalo Spirit Ranch.
