In Memory of Dante
The Guiding Spirit of EQUUS
With profound respect and deep sadness, we commemorate the passing of Dante, a remarkable being whose journey with us at EQUUS has been nothing short of extraordinary. Named after the epic masterpiece Dante’s Inferno, which symbolizes the soul's odyssey toward divine grace, Dante embodied this allegorical journey through every step, every breath, and every moment of connection he shared with us.
Dante was not just any horse but an imported lusitano, a breed renowned for its courage, intelligence, and indomitable spirit. Originating from the vibrant lands of Brazil, where the lineage of bullfighting horses is celebrated for their agility and heart, Dante carried with him the legacy of warriors and the soul of a sage. During his early years in the equestrian worldwide show, Cavalia showcased his extraordinary talents, but his arrival at EQUUS marked the beginning of a new chapter.
At EQUUS, Dante introduced us to the true essence of liberty work. Liberty work, in essence, is a partnership where horse and human meet on a plane of mutual respect, understanding, and freedom — a concept that Dante exemplified in every interaction. He was not just performing; he was communicating, sharing a language that transcends words, guided by empathy, trust, and unconditional love. This was Dante’s gift to us, showing us the path toward genuine connection.
Among all the relationships Dante nurtured, his bond with Kelly was a testament to the profound connections possible between humans and horses. Kelly found in Dante not just an animal but a kindred spirit, a true friend who walked alongside her. Their partnership was built on a foundation of deep trust and mutual respect, illustrating the potential for humans to learn and evolve through the wisdom of horses.
To say that Dante will be missed is an understatement. Yet, his spirit and the lessons he imparted remain with us. Dante was a pioneer, a philosopher among horses, who showed us the way toward a deeper relationship with these magnificent beings and, ultimately, with ourselves.
We remember Dante for his accomplishments and the love, joy, and wisdom he brought into our lives. We honor his memory by continuing the work he began, inspired by his strength, guided by his knowledge, and forever buoyed by the deep and enduring friendship he offered.
Dante, you were a true friend to the end, and your legacy will continue to light the way for all of us at EQUUS. Rest in peace, noble soul. Your journey has led you toward divine grace, and in our hearts, your spirit gallops free, eternal, and profoundly loved.
